Hollow Grind Side Edges
New for 2011-2012 season, EdgeTune, Inc. has developed an
optional hollow grind feature allowing the ski/board side edge to be ground
with a slight radius (hollow) similar to ice skates, knives and other very
sharp edges. Fig 1. shows a standard edge cross section with today's 3° side
bevel angle shown (not to scale). Fig 2. shows that same 3° side bevel angle
with a new 1½ inch radius EdgeTune Pro hollow grind (not to scale).
Benefits of a hollow ground edge
- The sharpest edge possible due to the acute geometry
- Point contact for greater carving control (like ice skates)
- Fastest edge due to reduced contact area, plus a hollow which traps ice,
turning it to water to lubricate the side (like Olympic speed skaters)
- Easiest edge to re-sharpen. Fig 3 shows a hollow ground chisel that has
been honed numerous times, showing the reduced area required to re-sharpen
Fig. 3 Hollow Ground Chisel re-sharpened by Honing only
High end racers/World Cup tuners take advantage of the hollow by sharpening
only with a wet stone hone, without the need to re-sharpen the entire side as
in Fig. 1. This saves precious edge material, and produces a razor sharp edge
quickly and easily every time!
Tool set-up is to simply tighten the rear adjuster screw and loosen the front screw for tilt.
